چکیده

This thesis documents the synthesis and characterization of an elastomeric polymer that is oxygen sensitive and can be interrogated using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) or Magnetic Resonance (MR) technology to report the oxygen tension in vivo at the site of implant. The polymer was tested for its sensitivity in response to oxygen, and the specificity of response to oxygen was verified. Oxygen diffusivity for this class of polymers was measured and correlated with the response sensitivity to oxygen to provide a possible explanation for the difference in response sensitivities within this class of polymers. Animal experiments were carried out in rats to test the performance of these sensors in vivo where device response to varying levels of inspired oxygen was monitored. Thesis Supervisor: Michael J. Rhological Behavior of Injectable Bioactive Glass/Gelatin Pastes Used for Bone Replacement

Injectable pastes are bioactive materials which are used in various forms in the living organism. The bioactivity of these materials are derived from calcium phosphate powder and/or a bio-glass composition. These materials are not individually injectable; however, they will be when suitable polymers such as chitosan, gelatin, sodium alginate, hyaluronic acid, etc. added to the paste. In this re...

Fluorescent/phosphorescent dual-emissive conjugated polymer dots for hypoxia bioimaging.

A kind of fluorescent/phosphorescent dual-emissive conjugated polyelectrolyte has been prepared by introducing phosphorescent platinum(ii) porphyrin (O2-sensitive) into a fluorene-based conjugated polyelectrolyte (O2-insensitive), which can form ultrasmall conjugated polymer dots (FP-Pdots) in the phosphate buffer solution (PBS) via self-assembly caused by their amphiphilic structures with hydr...

Spatiotemporal Oxygen Sensing Using Dual Emissive Boron Dye–Polylactide Nanofibers

Oxygenation in tissue scaffolds continues to be a limiting factor in regenerative medicine despite efforts to induce neovascularization or to use oxygen-generating materials. Unfortunately, many established methods to measure oxygen concentration, such as using electrodes, require mechanical disturbance of the tissue structure. To address the need for scaffold-based oxygen concentration monitor...

Synthesized Bimetallic Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells

In the present study, a step by step process was applied to synthesize bimetallic electrocatalyst (Ru and Pt on VulcanXC-72R). This process can reduce the amount of platinum and increase the gas diffusion electrode (GDE) performance in the cathodic reaction of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Using the impregnation by hydrothermal synthesis method, a series of electrocatalysts ...
